Our Story – Why 3 Idiots?
To leave the safety of a stable culinary career and dive into the unpredictable world of restaurant ownership, you’ve gotta be an Idiot.
We’re a husband-and-wife chef duo who grew up in Mumbai, raised on the rich flavours of home and decades of food-loving memories. After nearly 20 years in Melbourne, the craving for something real — the kind of food that made us feel at home — just never left.
Our mothers were our first teachers in the kitchen. Their hands crafted the flavors that shaped our childhoods, and their recipes filled our lives with warmth. Every dish we serve at 3 Idiots is a tribute to them — the OG culinary geniuses who taught us that food is love.
So, we made the leap — from serving someone else’s food in professional kitchens to sharing our own stories on every plate.
When we told people we were opening a restaurant that blends traditional Indian recipes with a modern twist, the response was clear: “You guys are idiots.”
The name stuck — and so did our purpose.
Today, 3 Idiots is a Melbourne-based modern Indian restaurant serving up unapologetically authentic Indian dishes — reimagined with a contemporary edge. Every plate tells a story of heritage, hustle, family, and a little bit of madness.
Because sometimes, being an Idiot is the smartest thing you can do.

3 Idiots Thaali
An Unforgettable Event
One of our most special and nostalgic takeaway events, the 3 Idiots Thaali was a heartfelt tribute to the comfort, flavour, and emotion of true home-style cooking. It wasn’t just food — it was a memory served on a plate.
Inspired by the warmth of our own kitchens and the incredible women behind them, this event was curated with love and authenticity. Satt’s mum, Ameeta, a proud vegetarian, helped us design a soulful Marathi vegetarian thaali — full of balance, tradition, and purity. Meanwhile, Niru (Pratt’s mum) brought to life a bold, flavour-packed non-vegetarian Maharashtrian Gomantak thaali, celebrating the rustic coastal charm of home-cooked feasts.
Every element of the thaali was thoughtfully planned — not just to replicate dishes, but to recreate the feeling of being home in Mumbai, for us and for our guests here in Melbourne who miss that comfort deeply.
It was more than just a super-hit event. It was an emotional connection. A flavourful memory. A celebration of mothers, roots, and the joy of sharing real food.
